What is actually behind the concept of "augmented reality"?  While the use of information and communication technologies regularly brings profound changes to the way we live and conceive the world, there are concepts that we are confronted with on a daily basis without really understanding their meaning.

Intuitively, referring to Wikipedia, augmented reality is defined as computer systems that make it possible to superimpose a 2D or 3D virtual model on the perception that we naturally have of reality in real-time.  

At first glance, augmented reality refers to the various methods that allow the realistic integration of virtual objects in a sequence of images. Thus, it applies to visual perception (superimposition of virtual images on real images), as well as to other sensory perceptions, whether tactile or auditory.  

The applications are therefore multiple and affect different areas: video games, education through games, cinema, television, industry and particularly the design phases of products or medicine … 

But understanding augmented reality is not limited to a simple definition. Indeed, it is a concept that uses many technologies. Thus, the term augmented reality, which appeared in addition to "virtual reality", is more and more contested. Indeed, in many uses, it is not so much reality that is augmented, but our own perception of things and the environment. 

Understanding augmented reality
Augmented reality is positioned as an interface between "virtual" data and the real environment. It is based on three important characteristics: a combination of the real world with virtual data in real-time, instantaneous interactivity (a change in the real environment leads to an adjustment of the virtual data and the use of a 3D model (corresponding to the world in which we evolve).  

Augmented reality essentially allows contextualizing data. Even if it is often associated with vision, it can augment any of the five senses with which the individual is endowed.  

In concrete terms, the reality is captured by a system and interpreted by a computer. The main part of the processing will consist in adjusting the link between the real and the virtual. To place a building in an environment, it is necessary to position the other elements of the decor and all this in real-time.  

Thus, augmented reality is the digital answer to the decision-making questions we ask ourselves every day. Easier to "build" than virtual worlds and easier for people to understand, it allows enriching reality. With the applications proposed by the technology, the possibilities of use become infinite...

Augmented reality not only allows for the integration of a playful component to learning, but it also offers enormous pedagogical interest: manipulation of objects, representation in space, anatomical visualization, simulation of interactions and chemical reactions, use of visual and gestural memory, etc., the possibilities are vast.  

In this type of dynamic and interactive environment, learners feel like actors. They discover things in action and better appropriate knowledge. Even if until now this technology operates through a computer screen, the rapid transformation of tools will soon allow the use of augmented reality in the classroom environment.
